Attribution Tracking Tags and Campaigns

Last Updated: Jan 17, 2016 10:43PM PST
Once integrated, Attribution Tracking Tags allow you to:
  • Measure campaign performance to acquire app users and track lifetime value
  • Identify which campaigns resulted in the most monetizing users
  • Re-allocate and adjust your campaign spends accordingly
Attribution Tracking Tags are organized into Campaigns to allow performance monitoring of a single application across multiple campaign sources, such as Ad Networks. Within these campaigns, you can further scrutinize advertising performance by adding groups to your Attribution Tracking Tags. Groups allow you endless modulation possibilities for your performance tracking; you can breakdown your campaign into regions, creatives, or any combination of specific criteria for each Attribution Tracking Tag. Creating a unique Attribution Tracking Tag for each group and campaign source supports deep insight into the performance of your advertising dollars.

Apsalar SmartTags is a new tracking tag built to provide new and more powerful customizations for your campaigns.  They allow you to organize your campaigns just like standard Attribution Tracking Tags, but offer additional cross-platform marketing and destination customization for your audience. For information on Apsalar SmartTags, see our guide here.

To use Apsalar standard Attribution Tracking Tags, please follow the steps below.

Before Creating Attribution Tracking Tags and Campaigns

  1. Integrate the Apsalar SDK in your application. Please see our integration guides for iOS and Android for more information.
  2. Add application details for your app(s) to your Apsalar account.

Creating Attribution Tracking Tags for a New Campaign

For Certified Ad Networks

Attribution Tracking Tags support the use of macros from our certified ad network partners. These macros will be added to the tag automatically based on the selected certified ad network partner.
To create an Attribution Tracking Tag for a new Campaign using a certified ad network partner:
  1. Navigate to the Attribution Tracking Tags page under the Campaign Management section.
  2. Click the “Create Campaign”.
  3. Enter a campaign name; by default this is named “New Campaign” with a time stamp
  4. Select a target application
Tip: To see all of your registered iOS applications, click the “…” button.
  5. Enter a Group Name, by default this is named "New Group" with a timestamp.
  6. Enter one or more campaign source. For integrated Ad Network partners, begin typing the name of the network and the name should be appear in the drop-down list. Click the Add button once you've selected your source(s).
  7. If you will run re-engagement campaigns with this tag, check the Track Re-engagement box.
    • Please note, only check this box if you are running re-engagement with this tag. Enabling this option without re-engagement can lead to reporting discrepancies with your selected campaign source.
  8. Select the "Save" check mark. For each added campaign source there should now be a unique Attribution Click Tag.

For Non-Certified Ad Networks

In cases where an ad network or publisher is not integrated with Apsalar, support for the network can be done using generic tracking tags generated from the Attribution Tracking Tag page.  The ad network must be able to insert the required values into the Attribution Tracking Tag, generally using their own server macros.  Some ad networks, including Google, do not support referral tracking. For more information, please see our guide for  Configuring Generic Attribution Tracking Tags.
To create an Attribution Tracking Tag for a new Campaign using a non-certified ad network partner:
  1. Navigate to the Attribution Tracking Tags page under the Campaign Management section.
  2. Click the “Create Campaign” button.
  3. Enter a campaign name, by default this is named “New Campaign” with a time stamp
  4. Select a target application
Tip: To see all of your registered iOS applications, click the “…” button.
  5. Enter a Group Name, by default this is named "New Group" with a timestamp.
  6. Enter the name of your non-certified ad network as your campaign source. Be sure not use the name of an integrated Ad Network partner as the Attribution Tracking Tag generated will not be in a generic format.
A generic Attribution Tracking Tag should be available for your added campaign source and group. Use our guide for Configuring Generic Attribution Tracking Tags to update this tag.

For Internal Campaigns

Attribution Tracking Tags can also be used to monitor internal email, web, or any other campaign which may not have the structure in place to support using device information. In these instances, Attribution Tracking Tags can be created that will use Apsalar's fingerprinting solution to track attributions from the designated campaign source. While fingerprinting is a viable and useful solution for attribution tracking, it is slightly less accurate than our preferred methods, so we strongly encourage using this method only when necessary. To create Attribution Tracking Tags for these campaigns:
A generic Attribution Tracking Tag should be available for your added campaign source and group. See Modifying a Generic Attribution Tag for an Internal Campaign section of the Configuring Generic Attribution Tracking Tags to configure this tag for your internal campaign.
